Outgoing Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand was farewelled with a bang this afternoon - a 21-gun salute.

Celebrations to mark the end of his five-year term began in the cold and rain at Parliament this morning.

A handful of people braved the miserable weather to watch the state farewell.

Sir Anand and wife Lady Susan, with the Vice-Regal Party, were met on the forecourt of Parliament with a powhiri and greeted by Prime Minister John Key and Speaker Lockwood Smith.

A Royal Salute with 21 guns was then fired by the battery at Point Jerningham.

Sir Anand inspected the Guard of Honour airforce, army and navy ranks assembled in the rain.

The group moved inside to the Grand Hall for guests - including cabinet ministers - to be presented to the party, then on to a lunch and speeches in the Beehive's Banquet Hall.

After lunch, the party will go to back to Parliament House for a farewell from representatives of the Indian community.

Sir Anand is the 19th Governor General and finishes up next week. Former defence chief Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mataparae will be sworn in on August 31.

A 21-gun salute from point Jerningham does not actually have 21 guns. It's a volley of 21 rounds.
