Senior lawyer Simon McArley is the new acting chief executive of the Serious Fraud office.
Departing head Adam Feeley leaves the financial crimes watchdog today for a new job as chief executive of the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie said Feeley, who took over in November 2009, said he ''effectively transformed'' the agency.
"He has reaffirmed public confidence in the SFO by successfully prosecuting high-profile cases and forging constructive relationships with other agencies in the law enforcement area," Rennie said.
McArley currently leads the SFO's financial markets and corporate fraud team, and has led high-profile prosecutions of failed finance companies.
Advertising for a permanent head will begin in the new year.
