The wife of embattled independent MP Brendan Horan says her husband should not be held responsible for his mother who "did whatever she damn well pleased" with her money.
Fresh claims yesterday about Mr Horan's spending of some of the money of his late mother, Olwen, came with renewed calls from NZ First leader Winston Peters for his former party colleague to quit Parliament.
Olwen Horan, who won an Australian lottery, amended her will before she died earlier this year, authorising the recovery of money loaned to Brendan Horan or "taken from me by misadventure".
Miranda Horan answered her husband's phone yesterday, and said her late mother-in-law had spent freely after the lotto win.
"People need to realise that they're not talking about a person who sat on the couch waiting for God.
"She won the Lotto, she went out, she travelled, she did whatever she damn well pleased.
"She didn't ask Brendan's permission and she certainly didn't ask her other sons' permission for what she wanted to do with her money," Mrs Horan said.
"You cannot make Brendan responsible for that.
"I've had an absolute gutsful of this and I've had a gutsful of this madness."
It was not unusual for parents to give their children money, she said.
"Let's say in 10 years' time your brother or sister comes along and says: ‘You stole that money, you owe that money' and then your brother says: ‘If you don't give us some money, I'm going to go and tell the media'."
The latest stories of Mr Horan's spending included claims he used his mother's credit card to buy clothing and to pay for accommodation on NZ First party business, before he was elected an MP last year.
Mrs Horan appeared to deny the suggestions.
"Do you think Brendan had a card of hers? She had her own bloody cards," she said. "No, he didn't have a card [of his mother's]".
Mr Horan declined to comment, including on whether the latest revelations would affect whether he would continue as an MP.
"I've got no comment at all."
