An enraged boyfriend grabbed two kitchen knives and stabbed and slashed another man repeatedly after he discovered his girlfriend cheating on him, police say.

Inspector John Price said the 20-year-old arrived at his girlfriend's home in Porirua to discover her in a bedroom with a 21-year-old man he knew.

He went to the kitchen and grabbed two 30-centimetre knives, Mr Price said.

He then slashed and stabbed the man before injuring himself with the knives.

Police were confronted with a bloodied scene.

The man surrendered when a Taser was pointed at him.

The victim was taken to hospital with head, arm, neck and leg injuries after the incident in Azimuth Place, Whitby, about 6.30am on Sunday.

The 20-year-old man was arrested and appeared in Porirua District Court on Tuesday, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded on bail.
