Police are investigating a suspicious fire at Titahi Bay School after a bin was found smouldering and propped against a door on the school grounds.

''There was obviously some sort of intent there but nothing came to fruition, thank God,'' Fire Service central communications shift manager Belinda Beets said.

Fire crews made it to the scene just after 5pm, by which time the blaze had died out.

Police are now on their way to the school to investigate.
