A woman remains in a critical condition after she was hit by a train near Porirua yesterday.

The woman, thought to be between 30 and 50 years old, was struck by a train on State Highway 1 opposite Whitford Brown Avenue, Porirua, at 11.15am yesterday.

The road was closed briefly to allow a helicopter in to transport her to Wellington Hospital, police communications inspector Ian Harris said.

Wellington Hospital spokesman Lindsay Davis said she was in a critical condition in intensive care.
