A Porirua man charged with attempted murder will undergo further psychiatric assessment.

The 23-year-old man appeared in Porirua District Court this morning charged with attempted murder and sexual violation.

He is alleged to have attacked a 54-year-old woman on the popular Kenepuru walkway on February 10.

Detective Matt Fitzgerald, of Porirua CIB, said it appeared the attack, which happened around 9am, was ''random and unprovoked''.

The man, who has name suppression, underwent psychiatric assessment after appearing in court last week, but more time was requested by his legal counsel for further assessment.

He was remanded in custody until March 19.
