State Highway 1 into Wellington has now been cleared from a seven-vehicle crash this morning.

There were only minor injuries initially reported from the crash, which happened at 6.40am in the southbound lane of State Highway 1 south of Porirua, police said.

The cause of the crash was not yet known, but weather likely played a part.

The motorway was ''completely blocked'' southbound for about an hour and motorists were being asked to take an alternative route.

It was cleared by 7.50am, police said.The traffic backlog was expected to clear through this morning.

Police said six cars and a motorbike were involved in the crash.

A pregnant woman and a male motorcyclist were taken to Wellington Hospital for precautionary medical checks.
