A water main has burst on State Highway 1 north of Porirua leaving a crater in the road and closing a lane.
NZTA is warning of delays and saying drivers should delay travel or take an alternative route south on State Highway 1, over Paekakariki Hill Rd.
However, trucks were advised not to take the narrow road.

NZTA central operations manager Mark Owen said cars reported driving over a ''big bump'' in the road, which swelled as water pooled beneath it when the main burst.
The cause of the burst main was not known. When it burst through the road at 9.45am, it left a crater in the left southbound lane, with water covering the southbound lane between the Plimmerton weigh station and roundabout.
Only the southbound lane was flooded.
One lane remained open and the water main was turned off by 11am.
NZTA expected to have the road will be fully re-opened in time for peak hour traffic tomorrow morning.
