A depot has been badly damaged by fire in the Wellington suburb of Grenada North.

Ten fire engines went to the blaze, which started in a large 50 metre by 20 metre building owned by Fletcher Construction about 10.30 last night.

Takapu Rd was closed from State Highway 1 to Bing Lucas Drive while the blaze was brought under control.

This morning a Fire Service spokesman said crews had left the scene, which was in an industrial area.

The cause of the fire would be investigated today, he said.
