Four people suffered injuries when a state house was set alight in a suspected arson in Porirua.

Two fire engines were called to the Champion Street address in the suburb of Cannons Creek about 12.20am, where they found a kitchen and laundry on fire, central fire service communications shift manager Belinda Beets said.

One person was treated for burns, while two suffered from smoke inhalation and one sustained a suspected broken ankle, Beets said.

Police were treating it as a crime scene, Beets said.

A police communications spokesman said it was too dark for them to investigate during the night but detectives would return this morning.

A central ambulance communications spokeswoman said an ambulance attended the scene and transported people to hospital, although how many people was not known.
