There were no suspicious circumstances around the death of an elderly Featherston woman found at her home, police say.

The body of the 70-year-old woman was found at her home yesterday, and police launched an investigation into her death.

ESR forensic staff were at the Harrison St West property this morning.

Senior Sergeant Brent Murray, of the Wairarapa CIB, said police initially had concerns about the situation.

The woman was yet to be named by police, because next of kin are still to be notified.

John McGrath, publican at the Empire Hotel, said the woman was a regular at the pub on Thursdays.

"She would do anything for anyone though, she really would."

His partner, Shirley Hunter, found the woman's body after she was not able to make contact with the woman over several days.

"I had gone round many times, just to see if she was alright," she said.

"It was so not like her to not let me know, we thought maybe she’d been called away urgently."

The woman's male friend had died some time ago.

"Everyone that was connected with [her] is not just a friend but family," said Mrs Hunter.

"And you made her part of your family because she was always alone."
