Heavy black smoke billowed from a garden centre this afternoon as firefighters battle a blaze in Masterton.

Emergency services were called to the fire at Garden Barn on High St about midday. An eye witness said a shed at the garden centre was on fire.

"There's black smoke pouring, pouring, pouring out of it and flames as well. They are putting quite a bit of water on it so it must be quite a large a building."

Fire spokesperson Murray Dunbar said 20 firefighters and five fire trucks atttended the scene.

The fire is now out, but one fire truck remains at the scene to ensure it does not reignite.

The fire did not threaten any houses, Mr Dunbar said.
