A man has received several stab wounds to his buttocks after a domestic dispute in Masterton, police say.

The 48-year-old is now in Wairarapa Hospital after being stabbed just after 9:15pm last night.

His injuries were not considered life threatening.

Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said a 23-year-old man, who was known to the victim, has been arrested.

He said the alleged incident occurred after an argument on the "east side of Masterton" but he would not give further details.

The arrested man was charged with assault with a weapon.

It was not known when he would appear in court.
