A person has been flown to Wellington Hospital with life threatening injuries following a crash near Masterton this afternoon.

State Highway 2 north of Masterton is closed while emergency workers secure the scene near the intersection of Loop Line.

A Wellington Free Ambulance team manager Helen Berry said a 17-year-old woman was thrown from a car in the crash, which happened after 3pm this afternoon, and suffered moderate neck injuries.

A second person suffered life-threatening injuries. It is unknown whether that person was a pedestrian or in another vehicle.

An alternative route down Paierau Rd has been set up.
