A search is under way on the Ruamahanga River north of Masterton for a missing swimmer.

The police-coordinated search is taking place in an area of the river near Bluff Rangitumau and Opaki Kaiparoro Roads near Opaki. 

Police were called to the scene shortly before 6pm.
