Batten down the hatches and prepare for a dusting of snow on the Rimutaka Hill Road during the next three days.
That is the message from MetService duty forecaster Andy Downs, who says Wellingtonians can expect 140kmh northwesterly gales on the ridgelines tomorrow.
"There'll be winds gusting up to 120kmh in the Wairarapa and Wellington by tonight. It's looking like quite a significant wind event," Downs said.
Heavy rain is also predicted to fall in the Tararuas tomorrow meaning river levels, including the Hutt River, will be running high over the weekend.
When the winds die down on Sunday there'll be no respite, as the predicted southerly change on Sunday will likely bring a light dusting of snow on the Rimutakas as temperature levels drop.
