Weather warning for Wellington End of the Indian summer Cyclone may pass over Wellington Tropical storm to end golden weather Harsh storm hammers capital Hot days, muggy evenings continue Summer arrives 'at last' Stunning weather to stick around Really, this is summer? Showery start to Waitangi Day

A typically wild and windy Wellington day is forecast today as gale force northerlies pick up across the region.

Northerly gusts of around 120km per hour, with the potential to damage property are forecast for the capital.

The wind will be strongest in the afternoon before easing tonight.

A severe weather warning is in place for Wellington, the southern Wairarapa and the Marlborough Sounds.

Met Service forecaster Andy Downs said people should be aware the wind could cause trouble on the Rimutaka hill road as well as exposed hill suburbs.

"It could get pretty wild up there. There is potential to cause damage but here in Wellington we are used to the wind so it won't be anything too out of the ordinary."

A brief period of heavy rain is also forecast for this afternoon.
