The worst of the wind and rain should be over this holiday weekend, with some sunshine forecast for later today.

Any rain in Wellington should now have cleared for the rest of today and the wind is forecast to ease this afternoon.

Forecaster Brooke Lockhart said gusts of up to 110 km per hour were measured at Mt Kaukau overnight.

"The wind has started to ease and will ease even more in the evening. The cloud will be breaking up."

It will be a brief respite from the unsettled weather as a cold southerly change and showers are forecast for tomorrow afternoon.
