More gale winds are in store for Wellington tonight and tomorrow morning, with gusts of around 100kmh forecast.

MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Wellington with strong north-west gusts expected to pick up tonight and continue throughout the early hours of tomorrow.

Forecaster Allister Gorman said this kind of weather was typical of the season and there were often quite a few wind warnings during spring.

''The winds will strengthen during today and by tonight we will probably have some gale winds in the hill suburbs.''

Wellingtonians are advised to keep an eye on forecasts as the watch could later be upgraded to a warning.

Mr Gorman said temperatures would be back up around the mid to late teens today after dropping to 13 degrees yesterday.

The winds would also affect Southland and Marlborough.
