Temperatures in parts of the Hutt Valley dipped to near freezing last night, with another cold night ahead for the Wellington region.
MetService forecaster Stephen Glassey said Upper Hutt got down to 2 degrees Celsius at 2am this morning. Elsewhere, Kelburn dipped to 8C and Lower Hutt to 6C.
The cold weather, brought in with a southerly, would be replaced by another southerly coming through later this morning.
Wellington's temperature tonight would drop to about 7C and Hutt Vallay to 5C. Winds would be strong in exposed places.
A large ridge of high pressure would move over New Zealand tomorrow, bringing fine weather for the rest of the week, Mr Glassey said.
