Wellington's calm week is to come to an abrupt end today with possible gales forecast for the region.

MetService is predicting strong northwest winds in Wellington and the Wairarapa today with a possibility the winds will gust to severe gales this afternoon and in the early evening.

The winds are caused by a front over the Tasman Sea which will cross the south of the country and then move north.

While temperatures yesterday peaked at almost 22 degrees, today's high is forecast to be a cooler 18 degrees.

People in Wellington and the Wairarapa are advised to keep an eye on the forecasts.

The severe weather watch also applies to the Marlborough Sounds, Fiordland, Southland and Otago.
