Strong winds forecast for tonight have forced the cancellation of Wellington’s fireworks display.

The fireworks display, scheduled for midnight to run for five minutes at the start of 2013, was cancelled just after 8pm.

Wellington City Council Community events manager Rebecca Hardie said a fireworks expert warned the strong northerly wind would have sent the fireworks off “pretty much sideways’’.

“There would be a chance some of the fireworks residue would end up landing on the wharves – and we don’t want anyone being hit by anything, however small.”

However, festivities along the waterfront were going ahead at Odlins Plaza and Frank Kitts Park, with entertainment and a children’s New Year’s Eve countdown at 9pm.

There will also be a midnight countdown.
