A calm Wellington morning will soon be forgotten, with strong gales expected to arrive later today.

A warning for severe northwest gales is in force for Wellington, the Wairarapa, inland Canterbury and eastern Marlborough, with gusts of up to 130kmh expected.

MetService duty forecaster Liz Walsh said northwest winds would pick up in Wellington from about 4pm, peaking at around midnight.

''It could be quite a loud night.''

The winds could be strong enough to damage property, she said.

The gales were expected to ease tomorrow morning but rain would set in for a time before fine periods increased in the afternoon.

''It could be a good morning for a lie in,'' Ms Walsh said.A heavy rain warning has also been issued  for the Tararua Ranges and Buller.

West or northwest gales were also expected in exposed parts of Fiordland, Southland (especially near Foveaux Strait), Otago, Canterbury, and Marlborough later today and early tomorrow.

Fine weather is expected on Sunday.
