A long Waitangi Day sleep-in could prove a good idea in the capital, with a showery start forecast.

WeatherWatch forecasters said a cold snap, set to arrive in Wellington on Wednesday, would hang around until Thursday.

However, by noon the showers should clear, leaving the day fine with a high of 17 degrees Celsius.

Those looking for more sunshine and higher temperatures were advised to head up the country. Forecasts for the Kapiti Coast showed a warmer and drier day, with the mercury set to reach 20C.

Further north, some morning cloud was expected, which should clear throughout the day.

People visiting Waitangi were advised there was a chance of showers, but the national holiday should be otherwise fine and warm.
