Two crashes  slowed traffic on State Highway 1 out of Wellington this morning.

The first crash happened at 6.43am in the northbound lane of the motorway, north of the Aotea onramp, police said.

There were no reported injuries.

A witness said four cars, including a taxi were involved.

All were badly damaged and by 7am traffic was already backed up about 500m.

NZTA said delays were expected with the right and centre lanes blocked.

That was followed by a second crash, near the Hawkestone St bridge.

Both crashes had been cleared by 8.50am.
