They may be flightless, but 20 Kiwi took to the air before being freed into the wilds of Rimutaka Forest Park.

Melody McLaughlin, of Rimutaka Forest Park Trust, is pictured with one of the birds, which were removed from Little Barrier Island and flown to Wellington by helicopter and Air New Zealand planes.

They were freed in the park on Saturday.

Ms McLaughlin said it was hoped to establish a population of North Island brown kiwi in the park, the first in the Wellington region for more than a 100 years.
