New Zealand Music Month kicks off today with performances including "duelling pianos" at Wellington railway station.
The ninth annual celebration of Kiwi music follows the success of previous years 33,061 Kiwi albums sold last May, about a quarter of all album sales.
Wayne Mason who wrote Kiwi classic Nature and Cameron Crawford, owner of the Piano Shop in Plimmerton, will be tinkling the ivories at the railway station in a boogie woogie salute to the month from 5pm.
Wellington band The Phoenix Foundation play to a sold-out house at the San Francisco Bathhouse tonight before heading to Napier to play at the Cabana tomorrow night.
Singer and guitarist Samuel Flynn Scott said he was excited about the month, which coincides with the band's national tour.
He was looking forward to one Wellington show in particular.
"The most exciting for me is one in Raumati [on May 30]."
Music could be a stress relief during tough economic times, Scott said.
"The internet and MP3s have been affecting things for a while now - pirating is the bigger issue for musicians. But it can definitely be a stress relief."
