Manners Mall will be opened up to buses after Wellington City Council voted to remodel the pedestrian-only street.

At a meeting this afternoon, councillors voted 11-4 to allow buses to travel through the mall as part of an $11.1 million plan to rejuvenate public transport on Wellington's 'Golden Mile'.
Councillors Jo Coughlan, Bryan Pepperell, Leonie Gill and Hayley Wain voted against the motion.
The proposal inspired fevered debate - including a campaign on Facebook that attracted more than 4000 opponents of the proposal and an e-petition with more than 1000 signatories. A 'Wgtn loves Manners Mall' poster campaign was also launched in hundreds of shop windows around the city.
Buses will be allowed to travel through the remodelled mall but other vehicle traffic will not.
The stretch of Manners St between Cuba and Victoria streets was converted into a pedestrian-only mall in the late 1970s.

TO 'Ed' - #29. Get a clue. Wellington has a better transport system than Auckland by far. There is a reason parliament is not in Auckland - becuase its nothing, just full of arrogant assholes who think the world revolves around them.
Manners with buses is a bad idea. I couldn't think of a worse off 'fix'. There are better ways to get this scummy part of wellington up and running and that is more dining places.
Great news!!About time something was done about this very scruffy part of town.Good plans for lower Cuba St. too. Foot traffic far better for retailers than "loiterers"!
Buses are a 1950's solution to a year 2000 problem!
It is the buses that should be replaced as part of a complete redesign of transport and streetscape to bring Wellington into the 21st century.
It is the CAPITAL CITY for heaven's sake - it does not even have a proper international airport, much less a decent public transport system.
High time Parliament was moved to Auckland.
Good job. Manners Mall has little character, is windswept and desolate after hours with rubbish blowing all around and seems to be homebase for hoodied dropkicks taking over most of the "nice" spaces. It doesn't have the character Cuba Mall has. Go the buses.
So this is intended to save up too 3 minutes travel time through the city? So what they are saying is that they will spend all this money and it will still be quicker and cheaper to walk?
It's well known that our Mayor has an intense dislike of both Manners and Cuba malls and the people who congregate in those areas - this is simply an extension of her previously stated intention to get rid of them both.
Wellington residents have no one to blame but themselves however (and I am one of them) - this is a problem of their own creation and can only be fixed by them in the next local body election. Look at the participation rates from the last local body election.

Hmm. Calm down. And try making sense.
i just dont understand how they can justify spending such a large amount of money on something that at the moment just isnt a priority
As a teenager I spent a lot of time loafing round the streets of Wellington but even we always avoid Manners Mall. I think of the space as a kind of no mans land between the purpose specific Lambton Quay and Cuba St areas. It doesn't work as the piazza it was meant to be because it is surrounded by tallish, unremarkable buildings and low quality retail. Transport is important for a city and maybe this is the place to accommodate it.
For each person injured or killed, every councillor should be tried for murder. Sentences to be additive.

Better late than never Manners Mall is awfull because it has been neglected by it's caretaker WCC, if this was a dog everyone would be up in arms and wanting to adopt it.
Buses what buses?
