A man streaking through the Mt Victoria bus tunnel was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by an oncoming bus.
The man was struck about 4.45pm yesterday.
Hataitai man Cliff Jones said he was waiting for a bus two stops from the tunnel when the man streaked past.
"A young fella passed me, running the centre line up Pirie St, completely naked. I saw the Hataitai bus come and I hailed it down and said there was a young fella entering the tunnel, but by the time it got up there a bus coming the other way from Miramar had hit him."
The tunnel closed for about an hour while emergency services dealt with the incident.
The injured man was taken to Wellington Hospital.
Wellington man Earl Krauskopf nearly died and needed 20 operations after a hit-and-run by a car in the tunnel on January 31.
The tunnel is restricted to buses, but motorists and pedestrians use it as a shortcut. Mt Victoria Residents Association spokesman Kent Duston said the latest accident highlighted the need for safety measures in the tunnel.
Mr Duston and association members will meet Wellington city councillor Rob Goulden and NZ Bus representatives today to discuss protecting drivers and pedestrians.

That's seriously funny. What an idiot!
It seems to me that anyone stupid enough to run through a bus tunnel would probably be stupid enough not to use a pedestrian tunnel instead.
I wonder what the bus driver was thinking about, though? I would have thought that a streaker in a bus tunnel would be fairly easy to spot.
OK Greeny. A possible even shorter route would be the sewer pipes. Are you advocating that the council build pedestrian walkways in there too?
system 1 stupid streaker 0 bet he'll think twice about doing that ever again
Two words: Darwin Theory.
Installing a set of sturdy gates at the tunnel portals that only open to buses would be a much better use of limited funds than providing "safe" access or creating an alternative facility for all those idiots and criminals that currently illegally use the bus tunnel.
Well something that would benefit everyone who does use it as a short cut would be a pedestrian access next to the bus tunnel, yes i realize it would cost a large sum of money to do this, but the reason people use the tunnel as a shortcut is because: A) Its a lot shorter to walk through than Mount Victoria tunnel and much better on the lungs as there aren't all those stagnant C02 emissions. and B) it takes you out a lot closer to the city than the Mount Vic tunnel.
Treat the cause, not the symptom. People will always make stupid decisions and no one can stop that, but you can make it safe and all it takes is tax payer funded money. Id rather my cash went to something like this than say military spending.
It's a bus tunnel, why are there additional safety measures needed for something that is clearly posted as a bus tunnel! Maybe we need to broaden the description of no vehicles to be no transit, especially for dopey cyclists, streakers, bo/girl racers & other fools.

Ok on this, to make it safer they put in place a 30km speed limit on the buses going through here. Yet still bus drivers speed up on entering the tunnel, how going from 50km/hr to 30km/hr is a reason for accelaration I don't understand. Yes people shouldn't be running through, but in the same thought waht about the drivers who are speeding in there, I have never been on a bus that has not sped up going through there.
