Commuters in the capital are facing delays thanks to a signal outage that has crippled the train network.

Kiwi Rail spokesman Kevin Ramshaw said the fault occurred about 4.15pm

"It seems to have been a power failure in the signalling system just outside the Wellington railyard, which has caused problems with the traffic flow."

Like traffic lights govern cars on the roads, signals control the movement of trains.

Mr Ramshaw said engineers were at the scene and should have a clearer idea by 6pm about how long it would take to fix.

TranzMetro services would continue to run on a half hourly timetable this evening.

Express services that terminated at Porirua, Plimmerton, Melling and Taita had been cancelled - while Johnsonville, Paraparaumu and Hutt Valley services were only running half-hourly - but trains would still stop at all stations.

In a statement, KiwiRail said they hoped to have a fix in place this evening and were "confident" services would return to normal for tomorrow morning's peak rush.

The fault comes three days after a landslide derailed a passenger train near Upper Hutt, putting Wellington to Wairarapa trains out of action over the weekend.

The derailment marooned the 300 passengers on board Thursday's train and forced the cancellation of all services until last night.

I couldn't even get an answer from staff last night as to an actual time on the delay - I couldn't believe it! Teenage daughter stuck at the train station after a school function, call the station and just get told all trains are delayed. When I posed the question of safety etc for those of us with kids waiting to get home, all I got told is we shouldn't 'rely' on the trains!

Packed family in the car, and we all went driving to the station to pick up my daughter! Train passes are NOT cheap, and I do not find this amusing anymore!

Very poor record, with all the problems in the last month or so. But it's the complete lack of customer service that annoys me most. I was repeatedly told by staff last night that trains were running on the half-hour, and the PA just apologised for the delay in announcing platform numbers for departing services. No mention of the fault, and no text message explanation. After seeing only one train leave the station in over 40 minutes, I got a bus. Tonight, I'm not going to bother going to teh station at all.

"Go the trains" yea right! Wellington's train network has become an absolute joke. Issues and resultant delays have become a fairly regular occurrence. One cannot depend on this random service especially on the Hutt line which even on a good day is generally slow and shoddy.

To protect my employment I have given up on this mode of public transport and am now commuting to and from work by car. I would return to using public transport if the rail network routes were opened up to competition, so that at least I could have a choice such as commuting by bus should this mode of transport be more reliable & quicker than the trains which incidentally shouldn't be too hard to achieve.

A bonus with bus services is most people are more likely to be dropped off closer to their destination which is great when it’s windy, cold and raining. I don’t miss at all being late for work and waiting waiting & waiting in the cold driving rain for pedestrian signals in the vicinity of Wellington railway station.

Took nearly 4 hours to get from Wellington to Paraparaumu. First it was the signal/power failure. Then the 6.30ish train left the station only to make it about 1km before breaking down blocking the line and causing further delays. After being towed back into the station by the capital connection train (loco) we (as in hundreds of commuters) finally left Wellington at about 8.10pm. If public transport is to be an acceptable alternative then these disruptions are not helping. Maybe just build transmission gully and be done with it and we can all drive in. Very poor service of late! Hope the govt. don't fix it up (with our taxes) only to sell it back to private investors to milk it and fleece us all again!!!

So what was the excuse for earlier in the day. My mother was on the 1:30pm train that took nearly two hours to get to Paekakariki at which point all passengers were booted off the train and told to wait for the next one as the one they were on had to get back to Wellington. No apology and reasons given for the delay or inconvience. She finally arrived in Paraparaumu at about 3:35pm. Piss poor doesn't even cover it.

They didn't send out a txt either which was piss-poor service as well.
