Nearly 60 little ''lactivists'' and their mums got together for an unusual drinking session at a Wellington bar today, to help set a breastfeeding record.
The 2009 Big Latch-On is the fifth year women from all over New Zealand have got together for a mass breast-feeding session, as part of World Breastfeeding Week.
The current record is 1122 women breastfeeding simultaneously and organisers were confident of smashing that this year.
At the session held at Wellington's Southern Cross bar, 59 mums managed to get their wee ones to latch on for at least a minute nearly double last year's turnout of 35.
The numbers from all the sessions across New Zealand would be tallied later today.
Leanne Inder, who brought five-month-old twins Benjamin and Ruby to the Wellington session, said she had been determined to breastfeed despite the extra effort of feeding both babies at the same time.
''It's exhausting but it's satisfying.
''I was definitely committed to doing it.''
