The first trailer for James Cameron's hyped new movie Avatar, much of which was shot in Wellington, has gone online.
Secrecy for the US$200 million (NZ$293m) film - Cameron's first since Titanic - has been high. Much of it has been shot in 3D and Weta Digital are producing the film's visual effects.
The first trailer went online on Apple.com today, ahead of a 15-minute short film that is screening for free at cinemas nationwide over the weekend.
Avatar was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago. It has been in production for four years, and the filming of it reportedly involves "revolutionary technology".
Cameron shot some of the film using a "virtual camera", a handheld monitor that let him walk through computer-enhanced 3D scenes and record footage as if he were the cameraman.
According to Flicks.co.nz, the film is "set in the distant future, where humanity has discovered the planet Alpha Centuri B-4, a world of not only unimaginable treasures and resources, but also deadly life forms.
"Those who attempt to use the resources for their own personal gain risk not only the new planet fittingly dubbed Pandora, but also the future of earth itself and all who inhabit it."
The cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver.
A short clip was shown at Comic Con earlier this month, and fans were impressed.
"I'm speechless. It's more extraordinary than any other movie that is out there, or has been," 19-year-old navy recruit Nahum Villalobos told Reuters.
Avatar is due for release on December 17.

Looks a bit naff. CG continues to look artificial and plastic! Even P.Jackson has reservations.
My question to James Cameron and Peter Jackson is what cinema will be upgraded in the Wellington region to be able to screen AVATAR in its revolutionary new 3d format - since we only have one cinema, at Readings, that can project in 2k digital. Isn't it time Peter Jackson invested money in upgrading the Embassy to screen 4K digital, as many of the new cinemas overseas have already done. Death to bad projection, out-of-focus screenings, no THX sound system installed, no 7.1 dolby digital....New Zealand is state of the Ark. About time we joined the rest of the world in giving cinema audiences what they paid for.
This movie looks amazing, If I don't watch it in cinemas, I will definitely watch it on DVD. I really hope it has a good storyline.
I wonder how it compares with District 9?
to andyB....
This is made by new zealanders.... pretty f'in amazing if you ask me. Give your country some support rather than sh*tin on it.
if you like sci fi, it will be awesome If you don't like sci fi, you won't like it, so why bother commenting if its a genre you don't like?
@Craig and AndyB - it could be argued Titanic IS the biggest film of all time.
Only Gone With the Wind has earned more (in today's dollars).
But anything with input from Kiwis gets my support!

'From the Director of Titanic' = from the director of 1 of the biggest films of all time.
