Wellington's port is cutting back outdoor use of the fumigant methyl bromide, but any decision on its future won't happen until a national review is done.

"Methyl bromide remains the only approved product for on-wharf fumigation," CentrePort chief executive Blair O'Keeffe said. Its use close to Westpac Stadium, cruise ships, ferries and Parliament, has angered environmental groups.

Methyl bromide is under review by the Environmental Risk Management Authority because of public concern about its health effects. Public submissions will be heard this year, with a decision expected next year.

Mr O'Keeffe said methyl bromide's use would continue in Wellington, at least until the review was finished. CentrePort was working with Erma to identify alternatives, and cutting back its use on the wharf, for example by treating goods in ships' holds where possible.

Monitoring has not found any gas drifting from the site. One alternative to methyl bromide is phosphine. It is also highly toxic but can be applied during ship journeys.
