Concerns have been raised about structural problems with a central Wellington office block after a cafe fire downstairs filled it with smoke.
Emporio espresso bar, in Chews Lane, will be closed for months and two baristas have lost their jobs after a fire burned down a wall and smoke damaged the interior.
About 300 New Zealand Transport Agency head office staff were turned away from work yesterday after smoke got into the six-storey building.
It is believed the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault in the cafe. The office block is expected to reopen on Monday after being cleaned.
