Fire in Upper Hutt hills burns through two hectares of bush

A scrub fire spanning two hectares flared up in the hills near Upper Hutt on Thursday.

A bush fire on the outskirts of Upper Hutt has been brought under control. 

Fire communications shift manager Jan Wills said 13 fire units and a helicopter battled the blaze at the end of Katherine Mansfield Drive, off Whitemans Valley Rd.

They were called to the scene about 4.20pm on Thursday.

By 8pm, all crews were still at the scene, but the fire was contained, Wills said.

There were homes in the area, but there were no reports of damage at this stage.

One firefighter needed ambulance attention, but there were no further details as to his injuries.

The fire covered a block of about two hectares.

Katherine Mansfield Dr was closed off while fire fighters fought the flames.
