Evans Bay was seemingly split in two yesterday after heavy rain fell in the Hutt River catchment in Wednesday's storm.
The volume of turbid water surging into the Hutt River creates a plume as it exits at the Petone river mouth.
Fresher water sits at the top of water column overlays the heavier saline waters of Wellington Harbour and gets pushed up into Evans Bay by northerly winds.
Although the plume appears to go right to the seabed, it could be just one metre deep.
