A quick-thinking Newtown passerby locked a knife-holding man in a sweet shop this afternoon.
A 46-year-old man, who is in the mental health system, went into the Choc Fizz Sweet Shop near the intersection of Riddiford and Constable streets just before 12.30pm today, Senior Sergeant Wade Jennings said.
Spurred by the 46-year-old's ''irrational manner'' and the fact he was hiding behind a machine, the shop keeper decided to leave the shop with the man still inside.
''A passerby did some good work and locked him in the shop.''
Police found the man holding a butter knife. He was arrested without incident.
Mr Jennings said the man had not threatened or hurt anybody, and nothing had been damaged.
He would be referred to the mental health system.
