Traffic is crawling up the Kapiti Coast as holiday makers get out of town.

Lawrence Chok, who was travelling from Lower Hutt to Palmerston North about midday, got caught in the heavy traffic north of Mana on State Highway 1 and was stuck travelling at about 10kmh until Otaki.

There were no accidents, check points, or other obvious reasons for the back-up except the large amount of traffic on the road.

''Everyone was quite chilled. I didn't see any rage,'' he said.

Acting Inspector Bruce Mackay said said the heavy traffic was going to be around for ''quite some time'' as holiday makers left town.

''Be patient because it's not going to make any difference if you are not,'' he said.

It is also reported that pockets of traffic congestion will be experienced as far north as Waiouru.

New Zealand Transport Agency spokesman Anthony Frith said motorists leaving Wellington on State Highway 1 should factor an extra hour into their travel plans this afternoon due to the ''extensive'' delays.

How do you feel about the royals' visit after week one?

Loving it, wish they'd stay for another week.

It's been awesome, but time to wrap up.

Enjoyment and apathy in equal parts.

Caught snippets - and that was enough for me.

Never cared, never will.
