Wellington Police are hunting a possibly-armed convict who has breached his prison release conditions.

Police are seeking the public's help as they try to locate Ashor Gorgus, whom they warn should not be approached.

Police have issued a warrant for his arrest for a breach of prison release conditions.

Gorgus is considered dangerous and has displayed unpredictable behaviour. He is known to carry weapons including firearms, police said.

He is described as a Middle Eastern male, approximately 180cms tall and of medium build, he has the word "crims" and a cross tattooed on his right forearm.

Any sightings should be immediately reported by calling Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000. Information can also be provided anonymously to the Crimestoppers organisation on 0800 555 111.
