Fire fighters have extinguished a blaze at an Indian restaurant in central Wellington.
They were called to the Taste of India on Cambridge Terrace at 3:50pm.
Fire fighters wearing breathing gear entered the smoke-filled restaurant and found the extraction system above the main tandoori oven on fire.
They quickly put the blaze out, Wellington senior station officer Paul Lyall said.
The fire could have been serious, if it had spread unnoticed, he said.
Four fire engines and about 20 fire fighters went to the scene.
Damage in the restaurant was mainly confined to the extraction system.
There was also some minor smoke and water damage.
