A mysterious new lead is being followed in the search for Wellington woman Mei Fan's killer - a witch's costume.
Police have released a picture of a witch costume taken in 2011 and are trying to source identical costumes of the same vintage.
"I don't for one minute suggest Mei's killer wore a witch's costume as part of a disguise, however for reasons that I cannot disclose it is important that we locate similar costumes,'' Detective Senior Sergeant John van den Heuvel said.
Police believe the mother-of-two was brutally stabbed to death on Friday November 8, 2013 with a 32-centimetre carving knife by an unknown killer they suspect was wearing a disguise.
The witch's hat and cape were most likely bought in Wellington for Halloween in October 2011 and police want to hear from anyone who may still have an identical costume that was bought in the city at the time.
"We know, of course, that these costumes are massed produced, imported and sold widely throughout New Zealand. As shown in the picture provided, the particular costume we're interested has black wispy hair strands attached to the inner rim of the hat."
Police are urging anyone with a similar costume who remember where and when they bought it to call the Operation Brussels team directly on 0800 348 348 or by emailing email@example.com.
Information can also be provided anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
