A Wellington man is in a serious condition after being trapped beneath a bus.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Pirie and Austin Streets, near the entrance to the bus tunnel in the suburb of Mt Victoria, to free the 21-year-old man.

He was hit by the bus and then became trapped underneath it about 2.50am, a police communications spokesman said.

A fire service central communications spokeswoman said they inflated air bags to lift the bus off him.

An ambulance communications spokeswoman said the man was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition, with significant injuries to his legs.

The man was in a serious but stable condition, a hospital spokesman said.

The road was closed for a short time while the man was freed, but was open again this morning.
