OPINION: The bloodied face of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, and the accompanying story about muscle strains (Nov 20), made me wonder what treatment he will get should he be injured later in life. I don't like his chances.

It appears the cash-strapped ACC is more often denying responsibility for accidents on the grounds that victims had aggravated old wounds, or had a "pre-existing" disorder. This is a false economy cop-out, cynically punting these people on to the back of a never-ending hospital waiting list, or adding to the caseload of an overworked insurance ombudsman.

Now here's a nasty thought. If motorcyclists can be pillaged to pay for their accident-prone mode of transport, should rugby players and other high-risk sports be hit by a special levy via their organising bodies?

Excuse me while I duck for cover.

Old people too? They have falls...Oh and children, levy them too. And soldiers, tradesmen, firefighters.....

Nothing in life is free, and all 'risk takers' should certainly be paying extra for accident cover, and that would include drivers, sportpeople, trampers, boaters, climbers.

How you collect it and enforce it, is another thing.
