Colin Cooper's not amused over Ma'a Nonu

Ma'a Nonu has escaped further punishment for his latest scrape with the judiciary, but Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper has warned his star centre he's running out of chances.
The Sanzar judiciary yesterday found Nonu had no further case to answer after being cited for a reckless tackle on Stormers first-five Peter Grant during the Hurricanes' 37-13 loss in Cape Town on Sunday.
But while Cooper did not think Nonu's tackle warranted more than a penalty, he admitted his star centre was on notice ahead of Saturday's match against the Bulls after being sinbinned for a spear tackle against the Cheetahs, then sent to the judiciary a week later.
"We are happy with that [decision]. We were surprised [he was cited], yes, and not surprised he was let off," Cooper said.
"We were pretty confident he would get off ...
"[But] he was very lucky not to get cited last week. I think there is no excuse for last week ... there was no excuse for last week and no place for spear tackles in the game.
"He's very aware that he's very lucky. He needs to make some shifts."
With fullback Cory Jane flying back to New Zealand after being concussed against the Stormers, the Hurricanes were desperate to avoid a suspension for Nonu and flew in a lawyer from Bloemfontein to represent him.
Cooper said citing commissioners needed to be careful they did not take big tackles out of rugby altogether, backing comments by Nonu last week that it would be "boring" if the physical side of the game was watered down too much by officials.
"I just think they need to be a little consistent. I remember a quote from the great Tana Umaga, 'it's not tiddlywinks'. As long as you stay within the bounds of what a proper tackle should be and use your arms and keep it below the neck then you should be OK."
More important for the Hurricanes is whether their campaign is still OK.
Cooper suggested South Africa's franchises had caught up to New Zealand's in terms of their professionalism and player development and were tougher than ever to beat on their home turf.
"It's the toughest country. The gap is getting closer to us in what they are doing over here.
"We have not played well, but I have a lot of trust in my team and management to turn this around.
"Some of our senior players have to have a look at themselves. You can't rely on the young guys. We have had a sit down and fronted the issues.
"I have been with this group for a long time and I have trust they can turn this around."

The Canes problems are lot deeper than Nonu's form and ill-discipline. They were beaten by two teams showing greater creativity and commitment. I doubt they will get close to the Bulls this week.
Obviously Rhodes B misses the point, one doesnt mind a favourable draw one year, but giving the two best SA sides what can only be the 'Dream Draw'two years in a row is a bit much. If the draw was spread around and the Sharks & Lions had the draw that the Bulls & Stormers have perhaps they wouldnt be down the bottom! Surely the Lions & Sharks are more in need of the home advantage first up. Notwithstanding Rhodes the advanatge of playing at home is huge, but Australian & NZ teams will never know because it simply doesnt happen. At the same time no one doubted the Bulls & Stormers are not quality sides, so inreality they do not need the draw working for them as well.
All the hurricanes need to be on half pay until they start to win. Then increase on results. A win for good pay, a loss for poor pay, where is the incentive if you get paid for poor performance week in and week out. The money is rediculous for the results they achieve. In the business world non performance is 'out the door' Are the Hurricanes a business or a social service.
NRL has my vote for action and talent.
With next years rugby 'union' world cup, the worry has started now. Poor performance will carry over into next year.
I agree with Tamati #17. Its a better comp than the super 14, and its more exciting!
Lets be honest - we have struggled for a real world class centre combo since the Mauger/Umaga pairing. Nonu looks good, occassionaly, when he is put between the class of Carter & the smarts of Smith,(when Smith is fit & firing) - then again who wouldnt? Nonu is one dimensional - his first option is to take it up himself or shovel a heap of crap on to the next player. Any opposition back lines with an ounce of smarts can read him like a book - & usually do. He shines against Northern Hemisphere 'softs' end of story
Ma'a just needs to fire ..plain and simple. the man is the mantis when he is on form , The backs need to run hard on to the ball, and the reason why they aint running hard on to the ball is coz the fowards aint going foward. We need more strong ball carriers up front to get some go foward. I say bring in Faifili Levave and get rid of Rodders, If this was the hurricanes of old they would get there mojo back this weekend and smash the bulls this weekend, but i doubt that will happen. chch
Nonu needs a rocket. How many times has he attacked the line ball in hand, broken the defence, set up his outside backs or scored a try this year. None of the above,he is standing still and passing the ball on without any impact. His play is the laziest, most predictable and boring of his career. He needs to be dropped, maybe that will fire him back up, but at the moment he is truly nowhere!!
Crusaders supporter here thinks that the Hurricanes will pick themselves up off the floor and deal the Bulls a hiding this weekend!!!
Re: PAT #10 - nothing wrong with Tialata's attitude mate. Nonu tho is in shocking form but there is no one else to fill the gap for the canes.

Nonu will be very lucky to make the AB's Wold Cup squad. If he plays, the AB's won't win the World Cup. I just hope the AB selectors are listening to Colin Cooper. There are a number of far more creative 2nd fives in NZ. Nonu is only good against weak opposition. He has never been a good tactical kicker which is vital for a second five in today's game.
