Get back to basics, Mexted tells Hurricanes

Former All Blacks No 8 Murray Mexted has questioned the Hurricanes' tactical nous and says they must get back to some old-fashioned basics to get their Super 14 season back on track.
The Hurricanes will limp back into Wellington at midnight tonight, having come back with just one competition point from three matches and win-less in the republic for the fourth time in the team's history.
Coach Colin Cooper's side has dropped from second to eighth on the Super 14 points table, Saturday morning's 19-18 loss to the Bulls their third on the trot.
The Hurricanes produced a champion defensive effort in Pretoria to restore some pride and confidence, but continued to struggle against the rolling maul and under the high ball.
Both areas require urgent attention before the Hurricanes play the Sharks in Wellington this Saturday.
Mexted has been an interested observer in recent weeks and believes the Hurricanes are over-complicating their tactics in defending the lineout drive.
"It's not new. This is just a return of the maul," he said yesterday. "It looked to me like they should be doing the things that have been successful in the past. It's pretty easy to remember.
"You compete aggressively at lineout time so they can't take the ball cleanly with two hands, that's No 1. No 2, if they do, you sack them immediately before the maul is formed and before they can get a rolling maul going. And three, you have to muscle up. That's the only way to do it because you can't walk away."
The Hurricanes have tried exactly that, unsuccessfully, in the past two weeks, not engaging the opposition maul in a bid to have them called off side for "truck and trailer".
Against the Bulls, it backfired with blindside Victor Vito sinbinned with 20 minutes to go after coming back in to sack the maul.
Mexted believes the Hurricanes can still reach the Super 14 semifinals saying "they did bloody well against the Bulls", but only if the option-taking and basic skills improve. "I wonder watching them play how much strategic nous they have. In the backs especially they lack strategic understanding at times. When Conrad Smith's not playing especially, they look short of tactical awareness.
"And I think some of the players have been found wanting under the high ball. That was obvious in the past two weeks with our wingers. David Smith must go away and get that right. He's not picked to kick, but he has to be able to catch the ball and [Alapati] Leiua is the same.
"There's not as much kicking as last year because of the rules, but it's still part of the core skills required for professional backs."
On that note, wing Hosea Gear, who has been out of action since having knee surgery following the opening match of the season, is expected to resume training with the side this week and may be in consideration to play the Sharks.
Cooper may also face a tough selection call at halfback between Piri Weepu and Tyson Keats after the latter's strong showing against the Bulls.
Other positives included far more assertive ball carrying in the pack where No 8 Rodney So'oialo, Vito, and locks Jeremy Thrush and Michael Paterson impressed and a return to form for Ma'a Nonu in the midfield.

I have to agree with Murray mextead and it hurts me to say that what has colin cooper done to the hurricanes this year i guess he is thinking to much about his job with taranaki already you have to wonder about all the coaching staff with him as well it could be interesting on saturday with the sharks winning against the highlanders they will be feeling quite conferdent against us
Mexted Ure NILL
Once again the Wheels have fallen off their campeign... I am So Surprised!
I'm much looking foward to Mark Hammet's appointment as coach. Hopefully he brings with him a Crusaders style culture. It's something the Hurricanes have always lacked - a sense of team unity.
For the meantime, we look forward to the departure of Colin (7 unsuccessful seasons) Cooper
Perhaps Mr Cooper needs a sub?
So much talent in the side yet they continue to stumble...perhaps the great Mexted should step in and show them how its done! Ha!
I like the rolling maul as it has the potential to get the forwards out of the backline, but I see the Highlanders last Sat refusing to commit to the maul and so being pushed back dramatically. MM IMHO is correct in how to defend against it. I also believe that wingers should only centre kick if at all. Kicking when there is one man to beat is a poor option esp now that the rules re the breakdown are being enforced and there is a clear likelihood possession will be retained if the winger cannot sidestep the last defender.
Cooper has to go. Look at the talent the Canes have and they are, yet again, average. They need management that can make these guys play and win.
There was only one point in it, just catching the ball would've made all the difference in that game.
why did cooper bench David Smith when hes the top try scorer of the super 14? and replace him with Alapati Leiua who dropped every single ball that was kicked his way.
so many handling erros in the final 30 mins of that game, cost us so much possesion.
piri weepu has been lazy again this year, hes not a nippy half back like he once was, tyson keats had a good game. piri needs to life his game if he wants to make the all blacks.
if we can get hosea gear and corey jane back then our backs will be back to their best.
take out Alapati Leiua and the replacement full back and put hosea and jane back in.
and also why is it that every week i see a different loose foward mix. stop changing the 6,7 and 8 combo and maybe wel get some flow going.
drop rodney hes gone and giv vito the number 8 jersey, and have karl lowe at 7 with patterson at 6. with waldrom on the bench.
canes can still make the semis since we showed that we can beat the bulls as long as walsh isnt the ref.
I think the canes need to focus less on hair products and more on rugby

Jared #3 - Spot on! Taking an in-form David Smith and replacing him with Alapati Leiua would have to be one of the dumbest things I've seen this season... I'm sure Leiua is good, but he's far from Super 14 standard! Taylor needs to go from Fullback and Leiua needs to go from the wing...
