Stein Huysegems made a predictably rusty debut as the Phoenix beat a Wellington selection 5-0 in a training game at Porirua Park tonight.
The former Belgium international striker, who arrived in Wellington on Thursday, hasn't played a competitive game since May and it showed as he failed to capitalise on several good chances.
But the 30-year-old also showed some flashes of his impressive pedigree, with some intelligent runs and one classy backheel.
Huysegems was subbed off at halftime, with Jeremy Brockie (two), Louis Fenton, Tyler Boyd and Alex Smith the goalscorers.
The Phoenix continue their pre-season preparations against A-League newcomers Western Sydney Wanderers in Christchurch on Sunday.
Their season opener is against Alessandro Del Piero's Sydney FC at Westpac Stadium on October 6.
