Del Piero touches down in Wellington
Sydney FC'S precious cargo has arrived safely in Wellington.
Italian Alessandro Del Piero, who has signed a two-year contract worth $2.5 million per season, is the biggest-name recruit in the history of the A-League and is expected to start against the Phoenix at Westpac Stadium tomorrow night.
The 37-year-old World Cup winner spoke to media at Wellington Airport today and expressed excitement for his new adventure after 19 years at Juventus.
''It's all new for me,'' Del Piero said.
''But I'm very curious and very excited and I want to know what it means, playing in the A-League and especially Wellington. Some of my team-mates have told me about it but I want to know by myself.''
Del Piero said he felt pressure to perform, given his price tag and reputation, but ''it's normal, it's right like that".
"I'm really happy about my first 20 days here because a lot of people come to the training and stop me in the hotel when I leave, to take a picture, so I'm really happy about that. A lot of Italian immigrants, they are happy too and me with them.''
While having not played a serious game since May, Del Piero is expected to start tomorrow night but he didn't know if he'd last the full 90 minutes.
''Maybe I don't know. It depends, the flight and all that, it depends. But I try to play, first of all, good, then we watch the minutes.''
