Wainuiomata will meet Randwick in Wellington's rugby league club grand final after holding off fast-finishing Porirua in Saturday's preliminary final at Fraser Park.
The Wellington heavyweights of recent seasons had an almighty battle, with Porirua twice coming back from 16 points down but eventually falling short in a 32-28 loss. Livewire halfback Quentin Kepa scored two tries for Wainui while experienced centre Greig Dean snared a brace for Porirua.
The result ends a five-year streak of grand final appearances for Porirua and pits the competition's best attacking team, Randwick, against the best defensive side, Wainuiomata.
They last met in a grand final in 2007 when Wainui were victorious. Randwick's last premiership was in 2002.
