Welington under-17s' run at the national tournament in Gisborne reflected tight competition for places in local rep teams, according to their coach.

The under-17s finished runners-up to defending champions Canterbury at the tournament, prompting coach Rhys Morgan to urge his players to push for the under-19 side this year.

Canterbury comprehensively beat Wellington in the final round-robin game, which determined the tournament winner.

Batting first, Canterbury made 222 off 50 overs; Wellington limped to 128 in reply.

Auckland, Northern Districts, Central Districts, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago were represented at the Gisborne tournament, which ran from January 12 to 20.

Wellington pace bowler Charlie McLean, who attends Wellington College, was named in the under-17 tournament team.

Wellington under-17 team: Luke Boyadjian (c) (Aotea College), Sam Keegan (Aotea College), Andrew Fletcher, Luke Scully, Charlie McLean, Corey Larsen (all Wellington College), Sam Dean, Ben Rammell, Henry Walsh (all St Pat's Silverstream), Josh Cuttance (St Pat's Town), Brad Chin (Hutt International Boys' School), Brent Compton (Australia), Dion Gibbons (formerly Upper Hutt College).

Match: Canterbury 222-7 off 50 overs (Ben Ward 69, Ananthan Yugaraja 42, Timothy Hampton-Matehe 34*; Charlie McLean 2-37, Josh Cuttance 2-45, Brad Chin 2-27) beat Wellington 128 all out in 40.2 overs (Andrew Fletcher 32; James Tucker 4-17, Theo van Woerkom 3-32)
